Blurb: Everyone comes into your life for a reason. And even though they may stay just long enough to break your heart, their ultimate purpose can last a lifetime.
Synopsis: They say everything happens for a reason, but try telling that to a young woman with a newly broken heart.
His PhD is in Hypocrisy…And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend is a memoir of sorts; a collection of poems chronicling the ups and downs, differences and the dissolution of one of my key relationships. Despite our interracial backgrounds (I'm black, he's white & Palestinian) and inter-religious upbringings (he is Muslim to my Christian), I thought we could and would end up together. But that didn't happen. The assorted poems (some short, some funny, some angry) talk about the love, frustration, and heartbreak, and the whole reflection culminated in an unexpected life lesson that surfaced on 9/11.
FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the author, editor, publisher, or Promo Host. This is my honest opinion about this book and I did not receive any monetary compensation for writing this review nor was I obligated to write a positive one.
Physical Therapist May 8, ‘00
You lay face down on the bed
I console you with tender strokes
against your bare back
How beautiful it is
that I can put you at ease
with just a few loving touches
But as you listen to my words of love,
the blaring ring of your phone cuts me off
You answer, and sit up to chat
as I continue to lovingly caress your back.
Careful not to speak to me
you signal to show the stroking is good
and again to say that I should
continue with more of the same
Apparently, the conversation’s too intense to interrupt
and my name’s not important to share
When asked what you were doing at the moment
you don’t even tell your little friend I’m there
Your body language-
Your entire demeanor changes
and within a minute or two,
I go from your girlfriend
to a physical therapist
Quietly tending to my injured client
Careful to stay in my place- the background
Doing only my duty of massage
so my patient can handle his affairs
I know it’s female on the line,
A weird vibe takes over my soul
Someone you’ve been with before
It turned out to be Nicole
My Rant: His PhD is in Hypocrisy and Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend is a mixture of poems that I felt were riveting. This authors aspects on life, love, up and a down was inspiring. The words were deep almost cutting to the very existence of your soul. I found myself in some of the poems. The author made you think all the while exposing you vulnerability. She gave you strength and encouragement in her words. But what fascinated me the most is she made you think through her perspective of endurance. I found these poems to be touching and inspiring. This is the first time I have sat down to read a book of poems and I completely enjoyed them. I got emotional because her words seared me deep. This is the first book of poems that I have read from this author and I can guarantee it will not be the last. His PhD is in Hypocrisy and Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend is a master piece and a rare find of such a talented poetic author that makes you think and feel in relive her experience through her poems.
My Recommendation:
I rated this book 4 out of 5 Purple Rant Hearts and will recommend this book to anyone that enjoys poems.
Tayo Oredein is a model, actress and writer. Tayo (pronounced Ty~yo, and which means "Joy" in Yoruba) is from Jamaica Queens, NY though and is of African-American and Nigerian descent (her father is Nigerian). She went to Wellesley College in Wellesley, MA and returned to New York after graduation. She later received a graduate degree from Hunter College, and will soon receive another from Rutgers University.

As for her writing, she has long since had a collection of unpublished work, but recently published her first book, "His PhD is in Hypocrisy and Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend", a collection of poems about love, and love lost.
