I
was fortunate to get the wonderful and talented Ms. Zoey Derrick to
take some time out her busy schedule to sit down with me for and
interview before her release of Finding Loves Wings. Here's what Zoey had to say about herself her work and upcoming projects.
Crystal: Zoey, I have
had the pleasure of knowing you and from my experience I know that you are
blogger and avid reader but I know there is more to you that meets the eye so
can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what inspired you to be an
author?
Zoey: Well, where to start would be a better question. I’m a
mortgage loan underwriter by day, a single mom of a beautiful, energetic 8 year
old in the evening, and a writer in the night. I love good books, great food,
and I’m an avid music lover.
Being such an avid reader
inspired me to write my own story, and the need to put my own fantasies to
paper.
Crystal: Is Zoey
Derrick your only pin name?
Zoey: Yes, Zoey Derrick is
the only name that I’ve written anything under, for now.
Crystal: What Genre’s do you write
in?
Zoey: Adult
Contemporary/Erotic Romance, and I’m dipping my feet into some really cool
Paranormal Romance.
Crystal: Are there any
book or authors that have influenced your work?
Zoey: Is this blog long
enough for this answer? I’ve always had a story to tell, but there are so many
wonderful authors that have inspired not only Finding Love’s Wings, but also
writing. It started about a year ago, when I picked up Fifty Shades of Grey.
From there I discovered the likes of Marata Eros, Debra Anastasia, Shoshanna
Evers, and Jennifer Probst and discovered the wonderful world of Indie Authors.
Crystal: You are about to release Finding loves
wings, how does that make you feel?
Zoey: Nervous, Excited,
Scared $hit-less, but more than anything a very strong sense of accomplishment.
Ask me again on release day, no doubt I’ll be cowering in the corner. :-)
Crystal : How did you
come up with the title and can you tell is who designed the cover and when is
the release date?
Zoey: I came up
with the
title of Finding Love’s Wings because both my Hero-Tristan, and my Heroine-Cami
have wing tattoos across their backs. Tristan notices Cami’s wings and it is
one of the biggest things that attracts him to her.
The cover was created by
Olivia Rivers, @RiversOlivia on Twitter, with permission from www.fotolia.com
Finding Love’s Wings will
be available on or after May 15, 2013. Exact time frame will be dependent upon
Amazon, Barnes and Noble, iTunes, and Smashwords.
Crystal: What inspired
you to write this story and can you share a little of bit about the characters
with us?
Zoey: Love, that was my
bottom line inspiration for writing FLW. I wanted to be able to bring two, not
so everyday, characters to life.
Cami is a beautiful
powerhouse packed into a 5 foot 4 inch frame. Her parents, both deceased, left
her with a fortune and a business to run. They also left her with a life of
neglectful actions, and she has had to struggle through the emotions of everyday
life without someone to help her better understand.
Tristan, Oh Boy Tristan, he
is the biggest thing to hit Hollywood in years, he’s smart, ultra sexy,
pierced, tattoo’d and a little bit of a bad boy. Tristan’s back story is a
little bit of the rags to riches, without a lot of the struggle.
Both Tristan and Cami have
their own demons to deal with in order to see if they can really come together
and love one another.
Crystal: Who is your favorite character and Why?
Zoey: Oh boy, that’s tough.
I don’t think that I can pick any one character to be my favorite. I love Cami
because of her no holds barred attitude, she speaks her mind, and she is not
afraid to stand up for herself and the ones she loves. I love Tristan because
of his patience, emotion and ability to prove to Cami that she really is
worthy. Despite his celebrity in Hollywood, in Tarah, he is just Tristan.
Crystal: What was
the hardest part of writing your book?
Zoey: Editing, though I
hired an editor to help me with FLW, seeing my hard work bleeding red ink was
really hard to take at first. The story just flowed out of me, from brain to
keyboard, causing that a lot of corrections needing to be made, most of all
with timelines and consistency throughout the story. Sione, my editor, has been
amazing.
Crystal: Are there
any other projects you are working on?
Zoey: I have several I’m
working on…First of all, I’m working on a short guest blog post for www.thedarkerhalf.com. The crew over there
have been a real inspiration as well as pushing me beyond my comfort level.
See question 11
Crystal : Zoey I have to
ask, you have done some short stories previously and their was one that caught
my eye. (smile), the one where a girl was dating a demon and she didn’t know………
Can you tell my readers a little about the story? and of course inquiring minds
want to know if that story will be a book in the future making.
Zoey: Ahh, Devilish Desire…
(originally posted to www.deadlyeverafter.com)
is the story of Nyssa and Link. Nyssa falls head over heals in love with Link,
only to discover that he is not as he seems. The story is still a work in
progress, I intend to release the first half of the story later this year, and
I will make sure you and your readers are the first to know when it comes live.
You can also see the cover for Devilish Desire on Deadly Ever After’s website.
Crystal: One of the things I found that was
interesting about you Zoey is that you spend a lot of time giving support to
other bloggers and authors and connecting with your readers. How do you fit it
all in?
Zoey: Aww! Thanks so much
Hunny! I support what I love, and what I love is books, and the fans of those
books. So with that, I feel it is important to support other authors and
bloggers because I know the hard work and dedication that goes into their work.
Buying their work, making a donation, or advertising hard work is something I
hope to continue doing.
How do I fit it all in?
Well, some days are easier than others. But I try to reach out via social media
throughout the day, and return emails, usually before I sit down to write for
the evening.
Crystal : Starting out on
your own as an Indie author was not an easy task how did you overcome the
obstacles and do you have any advice for other writers.
Zoey: I’m just getting my
feet wet in the world of being an indie author, but the biggest advise I can
give, is never give up. You will pour your own blood, sweat and tears into your
work, but in the long run, the self gratification of knowing you accomplished
something so monumental, is worth every ounce of it.
Crystal: Do you have anything specific that you want
to say to your readers?
Zoey: Thank You All, for
your support, for your gratitude and most of all, I hope you enjoy Finding
Love’s Wings as much as I did writing it.
If you want to reach me,
you can do so via Twitter, Facebook, or even email zoeyderrick [at] gmail [dot]
com.

so willing to bring me to your blog and to help me promote Finding Love’s
Wings, you, my dear, are amazing!
